Example fees on a $30,000 car by state
Same vehicle price, different stacks. This table multiplies the mid-band combined tax rate by $30,000 and adds mid-band title and registration.
Method: taxable price $30,000 · no trade-in · tax = price × (state rate + midpoint of local band) · title = flat fee when listed · registration = midpoint of annual band · doc fees excluded · as of 2026-07-13. States with schedule-based rates show tax as schedule.

Use this page to build intuition, not to wire money. Two neighboring states can differ by more than $1,000 on the same negotiated price purely from tax structure.

When a dealer quotes OTD, ask them to restate tax, title, registration, plate, and doc fee on separate lines.

Frequently asked questions
Is this what I will actually pay?
No. It is an illustration using the mid-point of local tax and registration bands on a flat $30,000 taxable price with no trade-in. Your county rate, vehicle weight, and dealer doc fee will move the total.
Why $30,000?
It is a round reference price near many mainstream new and late-model used transactions, which makes cross-state comparisons readable.
Are doc fees included?
No. Dealer documentation fees are omitted because they are not set by a single state schedule in this dataset.
Does trade-in change the tax column?
Yes in full- and partial-credit states. This example assumes no trade so the tax column is a pure rate times price illustration.
How is local tax estimated?
As the midpoint of the typical local add-on band in the vehicle-tax file. Some ZIPs sit outside that band.
