How to negotiate an OTD price by email

Ask for one number broken into lines before you set foot in the showroom.

Template logic

State the exact vehicle (VIN if possible), your registration ZIP for tax, and that you want an out-the-door figure with tax, title, registration, plate, and documentation fee itemized. Say you are comparing two written OTDs and will not discuss monthly payment until OTD is fixed.

Attach nothing about your max budget. The goal is their stack, not your ceiling.

Red flags in the reply

“Fees TBD at signing,” bundled “government fees” without a breakdown, and doc fees far above anything you can justify against a state cap conversation all deserve a follow-up — or a walk.

Using TagTally in the thread

Run the OTD estimator with your price and state first. If their tax line is far from the mid-band estimate after trade rules, ask which locality rate they used. You are not accusing; you are reconciling tables.

Frequently asked questions

Why email first?

Writing freezes the fee stack. Showroom pressure often reintroduces backend products and vague “fees TBD.”

What must be itemized?

Vehicle price, trade allowance, sales/excise tax, title, registration/plate, doc fee — separately.

Should I discuss monthly payment?

Not first. Payment mixes APR, term, and add-ons. Lock OTD, then finance.

What if they refuse to email OTD?

That is a signal. Another dealer usually will.

Is this legal advice?

No. Negotiation hygiene only.
